Thorncliffe is bounded on the north by 87 Avenue, on the south by Whitemud Drive, on the east by 170 Street, and on the west by 178 Street. Located just south of West Edmonton Mall, Thorncliffe enjoys great access to a wide variety of commercial amenities.

Its close proximity to Whitemud Drive makes for easy east/west commuting, and 170 Street is a fast corridor to the north of the city. Approximately half of Thorncliffe’s units are renter-occupied, and its population is quite mobile on average; only 40% have lived in the area for five years or more.

Thorncliffe was mostly developed in the 1970s – around 65% of its buildings date to that decade and development was based on the idea of maintaining a higher than traditional density. Much was focused on row houses and low-rise apartments; only 30% of dwellings are single-detached homes.

The neighborhood was named by developers, so the reason is unknown. Thorncliffe is home to two elementary schools (one public, one Catholic) and First Start Outreach High School.
