LIVE IN SOUTH EDMONTON
Brander Gardens, a residential neighbourhood in southwest Edmonton, was named in honor of George Brander, who established himself in Edmonton in 1921 and proceeded to cultivate a thriving, locally-renowned peony garden for over 20 years.
The Brander Gardens neighbourhood is made up of an approximately equal number of low-rise apartments and row houses, with some detached single-family homes present as well. The neighbourhood was originally conceived in the late 1960’s as part of the Riverbend/Terwilliger Heights Outline Plan, with almost three quarters of the homes developed prior to 1980. The population is relatively mobile, with less than half of the residents having lived at their present address for five years or more.
Public, parochial and private schools are all represented in Brander Gardens. The neighbourhood is home to Riverbend Junior High School and Brander Gardens Elementary School, along with St. Monica Catholic Junior High School. A fourth school, Tempo School, is K-12 and privately run.
Brander Gardens extends from Whitemud Drive on the east to the River Valley on the west. Its southern boundary line is 51st Avenue, with the River Valley comprising a natural border to the north. The neighbourhood’s proximity to Whitemud Drive makes for convenient east-west travel. For those who like to stroll, Brander Gardens features a variety of restaurants and cafes within easy walking distance.
The scenic hiking trails of the River Valley are also easily accessible from Brander Gardens. Lying to the west and only minutes away are the family-friendly attractions of Fort Edmonton Park, which include pony rides, miniature golf, and a 1920’s-style midway complete with Ferris wheel.
